Folly Tree Arboretum invites you to a plein air native orchid drawing session with illustrator and Folly Tree Artist-in-Residence Julia Rothman. Join us among a local flush of Cypripedium acaule, commonly known as the Pink Lady’s Slipper, for an intimate workshop that offers a chance to slow down, observe closely, and translate the delicate forms of native orchids onto paper. Guided by Rothman’s approachable style, participants will explore techniques for capturing botanical detail while deepening their connection to these threatened plants.

Julia Rothman is the author and illustrator of over seventeen books. She runs The Figure Assembly, hosting a variety of workshops including Figure Drawing, Speed Portrait Night, and Seen Here, an interview-and-drawing series, out of her studio.

Julia is the recipient of the 2023 Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf Visionary Award from the Rhode Island School of Design. For five years, she created the illustrated column Scratch for The New York Times, in collaboration with Shaina Feinberg, highlighting small businesses with big personalities.

She has taught at the School of Visual Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design, and has led workshops at MoMA, Hauser & Wirth, and Ludlow House, among others.

In 2017, Julia began the “More/Less” list as a personal and more relaxed approach to New Year’s resolutions. After sharing an illustrated version in The New York Times, the idea spread widely, with outlets like Vogue and The Cut helping it grow into a shared annual tradition.

She is also the co-founder of Women Who Draw, an open directory of professional female illustrators, artists, and cartoonists, created with Wendy MacNaughton to increase visibility—especially for illustrators of color, LGBTQ+ artists, and other underrepresented groups.
